Warner Music recording artist Sitti will play the role of a sexually abused woman in a theatrical production to be staged end of this year.
The Philippines’ Queen of Bossa Nova has accepted the offbeat role in a bid to have a solid acting background in her resume.
Sitti had previously appeared in ABS-CBN TV shows, “Your Song” and “Isabella.”
“I have so many emotions that my genre of music just cannot give vent to,” she told Manila Bulletin Online and other members of the press at a recent interview. “I, too, feel fear, anger, doubt and other things.”
Still, she tries to vary her moves. In her just-released fourth album, “Contagious,” Sitti remade songs by artists few would think she’d take on. These include Annie Lennox (“No More I Love You’s”), Culture Club (“Do You Really want To Hurt Me”), Sarah McLachlan (“Adia”), Hall & Oates (“One On One”) and Mike Francis (“Let Me In”).
The only original song in “Contagious” is titled “Is This Love,” written by Andrew Fromm of Christian Bautista’s “The Way You Look At Me”-fame.
Her previous single saw her singing pop with Christian Bautista in the award-winning song, “Captured.” Sitti, too, collaborated with the Las Pinas Boys Choir on a track in her Christmas album released last year.
Sitti’s repertoire in her live shows spring surprises. Apart from bossa nova, the singer breaks into Latin numbers, jazz and even pop.
“There are so many things about me that few people know,” she said. “I just cannot limit myself to doing one thing – I have to grow [as an artist]!”
She quickly added, though, that her desire to reinvent herself doesn’t make her one who bites the hand that feeds. She acknowledged Warner Music’s investments in and vision for her career..
Prior to “Contagious,” Sitti released the highly successful CDs “Café Bossa,” “My Bossa Nova” and “Ngayong Pasko” under the label.
“I understand that my image as a singer is already established that’s why it’s hard to move away from it now. Ganito na lang: if people like me for my music, then they can buy the album or go to my shows.
“But if they like to see another side of me, then there’s the forthcoming play.”
Sitti recently performed songs from “Contagious” at Eastwood Mall Open Park with samba-Brazilian band Brigada.
Other songs in “Contagious” are “Promises/A New Day for You” (originally by Basia); “Till There Was You” (Beatles); “Bossa Nova Baby” (Elvis Presley); “La-La Means I Love You” (Jackson 5); “A Certain Sadness” (Astrud Gilberto) and “Dindi” (Jobim).
The “Contagious” album launch was supported by Victoria Marin at Greenbelt 5 (for Sitti’s accessories), Magic 89.9, Eastwood City Mall, Red Box Trinoma and Likha Catering.
