    Sitti on a stretch

By Gab Fab / Jet Valle

Bossa-nova exponent Sitti takes on the role of Martha in Atlantis Productions’ staging of the Tony Award-winning musical Spring Awakening. The singer has followed the siren call of the theater stage before, having done a turn as Mary Walter in a one-night-only staging of Katy The Musical. This, coupled with acting work in various TV programs, has prepared the singer for the substantial material of Spring Awakening.

Based on one of the most controversial pieces of literature that was banned for 100 years, Spring Awakening is the tale of teenagers on the road of self-discovery. Written by Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater, the musical is the winner of eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical.

Spring Awakening also stars Joaquin Valdes and Miguel Mendoza, and runs from September 25 to October 18 at the Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium, RCBC Plaza, Makati.

For tickets: Atlantis Productions, 892-7078 or 840-1187. Due to explicit content and some nudity, parental discretion is advised.

How did you the land the role of Martha in Spring Awakening?

Atlantis contacted me to audition for the role. Prior to that, though, I’d been telling my manager Boy Abunda that I really wanted to be part of a theater production. A few weeks after the audition, Atlantis contacted me again to say that I got the part, and they were just awaiting approval from Broadway.

Getting a different high on stage acting

    Snippet …

Tackling another important role in the musical play is bossa nova singer Sitti who will be setting aside her music as she plays Martha, who she describes as “simple at first, but really there is a lot of depth and character to her. She’s ultra conservative, obedient yet very brave and resilient.” It is a character Sitti sees in young people today and hopes to share with the greater public.

Sitti has followed the siren call of the stage before, having done a turn as Mary Walter in the one-night-only staging of Katy the Musical. This, coupled with acting work in various TV programs has prepared the singer for the substantial material of the Tony Award-winning Spring Awakening. From all accounts, another chance at the stage is something she more than relishes.

    Sitti at Club Vito

Sitti will perform on Aug. 30, 10 p.m.

MANILA, Philippines – Club Vito is a newly-built music bar located at the heart of Noveleta, Cavite. It is owned by friends businessman Rex (owner of Buns and Pizza), architect Buboy, DJ Mark and Jobert Sucaldito. In its two months of opening, Club Vito has slowly captured Cavite music aficionados because of its good food, cozy ambience and good service. It’s the only music bar that regularly features mainstream musical artists every last Sunday of the month.

Last month, Luke Mejares performed at the jampacked venue. On Aug. 30 at 10 p.m., Sitti is the featured guest.

“Sitti is everyone’s request for this month. You know how busy Sitti is these days. She’s with the A.S.A.P. Sessionistas concert at Araneta Coliseum tomorrow, Aug. 28. Thank God she agreed to have a show at Club Vito. We will have a cool one hour of beautiful music with Sitti,” says Jobert.

    Sitti tries theater

    by Boy Abunda

When Sitti emerged in the local music scene a few years back, some were aghast with her audacity to barge into the local pop audience with her musical genre.

And when she succeeded in carving a niche for herself, many called her flash in the pan.

Nowadays, no one can contest that she is Philippines’ Queen of Bossa Nova. With three successful bossa nova albums — Café Bossa, My Bossa Nova and Ngayong Pasko — under her belt, and another just-released (titled Contagious, still under Warner Music Philippines), Sitti has grown not only as an artist but as a young woman.

In Contagious, Sitti demonstrates that almost any song can be turned into bossa nova numbers. The 15 remakes in the CD span musical genres that an artist of lesser mettle would have a hard time stamping his signature on.

The artists whose works she does versions of are those even her most avid fans would not expect: Annie Lennox (No More I Love You’s), Sarah McLachlan (Adia) and Sade (Your Love Is King), just to name a few.

She even has an original, titled Is This Love which was co-written by Andrew Fromm of Christian Bautista’s The Way You Look At Me — fame.
