On the menu: Atlantis Productions’ star-studded production of “Nine”

Atlantis Productions’ fourth show offering for their 2012 line-up may just be the ultimate fangirl/fanboy heaven for us, Philippine theater followers! Atlantis’ production of Tony award winning musical Nine is not simply star-studded, but will showcase some of the Philippine’s finest and multi-awarded theater performers.

Nine is a musical with a book by Arthur Kopit, music & lyrics by Maury Yeston. The story is based on Federico Fellini’s semi-autobiographical film 8½. It focuses on film director Guido Contini, savoring his most recent & greatest success but dreading his imminent 40th birthday and a midlife crisis blocking his creative impulses and entangling him in a web of romantic difficulties in early-1960s Venice. The musical won 5 Tony Awards, including best musical, and has enjoyed a number of revivals.  x

Leading the cast as film director Guido Contini is rock star Jett Pangan, and playing his wife for the second time after their critically acclaimed performance as dysfunctional couple Dan and Diana Goodman in  Atlantis’ production of Next To Normal last year, is the first lady of Philippine musical theatre, Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo as Luisa del Forno. Veteran theater actress Jay Valencia-Glorioso, who will be reprising her Aliw award-winning role as Abuela Claudia in the repeat run of In The Heights in March, will be playing Guido’s mother.

Playing the role of Carla, Guido’s mistress, is one of the most versatile theater actresses we have, Miss Saigon alumna Carla Guevara-Laforteza, last seen with Atlantis in The 25th Annual Putnam Spelling Bee and Avenue Q. Last seen in a musical in The Sound of Music in 2006, multi-awarded TV and film actressCherie Gil returns to the world of musical theater as producer and former vedette Liliane Le Fleur. Cherie has done two straight plays with Atlantis: The Guys in 2004 and Doubt in 2006. From Vietnamese (Kim, Miss Saigon), to Egyptian (Aida, Aida), to Latina (Vanessa, In the Heights), Ima Castro, who’s insane vocals are otherworldly, now takes on the role of Italian prostitute Saraghina, who teaches young Guido the ways of love.

Playing the role of Claudia Nardi, a film star who is the muse of Guido’s greatest successes, is another acclaimed TV and film actress, Eula Valdez, who wow-ed audiences in her portrayal of the title role in Tanghalang Pilipino’s ZsaZsa Zaturnnah Ze Muzikal. Also in Nine is 2006 Aliw Awards nominee Yanah Laurel, last seen with Atlantis in Hairspray and as Thea in Spring Awakening, who will be playing the role of film critic Stephanie Necrophorus, and returning to the musical theater stage after her debut in Katy! The musical, and with Atlantis as Martha in Spring Awakening, is Philippine’s Queen of Bossa Nova Sitti Navarro as Our Lady of the Spa.

This casting is something we, theater fans, never even dared dreaming of because it just seems too perfect to be happening in this imperfect world, but Atlantis made it possible to put all of these big names in a show together for us. There’s no reason to think twice, you just know this is something you shouldn’t miss! Nine will run from Sept. 21 until Oct. 7, 2012 at the Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium RCBC Plaza, Makati City. See you at the theater!
