    Sitti on a stretch

By Gab Fab / Jet Valle

Bossa-nova exponent Sitti takes on the role of Martha in Atlantis Productions’ staging of the Tony Award-winning musical Spring Awakening. The singer has followed the siren call of the theater stage before, having done a turn as Mary Walter in a one-night-only staging of Katy The Musical. This, coupled with acting work in various TV programs, has prepared the singer for the substantial material of Spring Awakening.

Based on one of the most controversial pieces of literature that was banned for 100 years, Spring Awakening is the tale of teenagers on the road of self-discovery. Written by Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater, the musical is the winner of eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical.

Spring Awakening also stars Joaquin Valdes and Miguel Mendoza, and runs from September 25 to October 18 at the Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium, RCBC Plaza, Makati.

For tickets: Atlantis Productions, 892-7078 or 840-1187. Due to explicit content and some nudity, parental discretion is advised.

How did you the land the role of Martha in Spring Awakening?

Atlantis contacted me to audition for the role. Prior to that, though, I’d been telling my manager Boy Abunda that I really wanted to be part of a theater production. A few weeks after the audition, Atlantis contacted me again to say that I got the part, and they were just awaiting approval from Broadway.

Getting a different high on stage acting

    Snippet …

Tackling another important role in the musical play is bossa nova singer Sitti who will be setting aside her music as she plays Martha, who she describes as “simple at first, but really there is a lot of depth and character to her. She’s ultra conservative, obedient yet very brave and resilient.” It is a character Sitti sees in young people today and hopes to share with the greater public.

Sitti has followed the siren call of the stage before, having done a turn as Mary Walter in the one-night-only staging of Katy the Musical. This, coupled with acting work in various TV programs has prepared the singer for the substantial material of the Tony Award-winning Spring Awakening. From all accounts, another chance at the stage is something she more than relishes.

    From rocking to soothing

    By Phillip Cu-Unjieng

Warner Music has two new releases that come from opposite ends of the music spectrum. The Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen Soundtrack reads like a who’s who of the current rock music scene, while their new Sitti CD finds her in an ’80s and ’90s frame of mind, giving hits from that era her signature samba/bossa spin.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen Soundtrack (Warner Music) —This is one of those compilations that either has us raving and rocking, or has us just thinking “quick fix” but just a hint of each band’s output. Look at the list of bands with tracks on this soundtrack — Linkin Park, Green Day, All American Rejects, the Fray, Staind, Hoobastank, Nickelback, Cheap Trick and Taking Back Sunday — and one really can’t ask for more in terms of quality bands and music. And the funny part is, my favorite tracks here are Cavo’s Let It Go and the funky cover of Talking Heads’ Burning Down the House by The Used. So if you hate buying CDs, of the mind that most of them have two, three good tracks, and the rest are filler, then this could be the wise buy for you.

Contagious Sitti (Warner Music) — As can be expected, there are the Jobim tracks that stamp authenticity to the samba muse that has dominated Sitti’s musical agenda, but what makes this new CD unique, are the covers that are given the Sitti treatment. Sade’s Your Love Is King, Sarah MacLachlan’s Adia, Smokey Robinson’s La La Means I Love You, Annie Lennox’s No More I Love You’s, Mike Francis’ Let Me In, One On One from Hall & Oates, a Basia medley and Culture Club’s Do You Really Want to Hurt Me. Really liked the Adia and One on One, and those work better than say, the Annie Lennox, which is a gut-wrenching tune now made too languid. But by and large, this is another feather in the cap for Sitti; smart selections, solid rearranging, and her voice and the formula still works.

    The stars ask: Forgive me

    By Boy Abunda Updated

I am spending Holy Week in Boracay with my partner Bong Quintana, my nieces Lani and Ethel, my nephew Jake, my friends Eric Santos and Leo Puri. Nanay is in our rest house in Lipa, Batangas, while my sister Mana Fe decided to stay in Borongan, Eastern Samar. Nanay who stays most of the time in Borongan was not keen in going to Boracay. In Lipa, she is close to the church of Our Lady of Mediatrix where she often goes to pray. And she’s surrounded with an abundance of beautiful flowers and green plants she enjoys talking to, and she will have enough space for her morning walks. Boracay was a last-minute choice for us. I love Boracay during Holy Week because I can do both — pray and play. Where are some of our friends/celebrities going to this Holy Week and if they were to ask for forgiveness for one sin what would it be?

Dulce: We’re spending it in Villa Escudero. It is bonding time for us. As a believer of Jesus Christ, we all know that all sins are forgiven when we receive Jesus as personal savior and the Lord. It’s like singing, “Ako ang nagwagi, ang kasalanan ko’y kanyang binawi. Ako ay pinatawad niya, tunay na malaya na.”

Bobby Garcia: I am spending it with the family enjoying the quiet of Manila. Maybe go to Tagaytay for a few days. If I were to ask forgiveness, it would be for sometimes asking for more when already God has blessed me with so much.

Mariel Rodriguez: I am in Singapore during the Holy Week. My good friend lives there and it’s good to see old friends.

Sitti: I went whale shark watching in Donsol. I am spending the remainder of Holy Week at the Family home in Las Piñas like we always do. I would ask God to forgive me for all the sins I have committed, for the moments of self centeredness and all those times when anger, resentment, and ungratefulness resided in my heart.
